Renault was founded in 1898 by Louis Renault and his brothers. At first, the company began with the production of compact cars, but didn’t begin to use mass production techniques until 1905. These were implemented in order to allow Renault the facilities to provide trucks, ambulances, shells and stretchers throughout the First World War.
The company’s first commercial production line was created in Billancourt during 1929 but faced financial difficulties. This led to Renault’s nationalization in 1945 which resulted in the purchase and expansion of manufacturing plants by the company. Throughout the 20s and 30s, Renault has built models such as the 6cv, the Monasix, 15cv and the Vivasix. During this period Renault also aimed to branch out into the UK market by producing ‘colonial’ modified versions of their previous models.
During the 1980s the company enjoyed success and experienced company growth. In 1984 Renault launched the Escape which was the first multi-purpose vehicle to be produced in Europe. The corporate enjoyed success on the commercial market, the Renault 25 and Espace performed well in the professional racing sphere. The company also went on to acquire Nissan which enabled it to produce high-quality vehicles such as the Megane and the Laguna and expand its presence in the international market.
Recently the company has started working on eco-technologies, which means that the vehicles could run on various energies. This includes the research and development of biofuels, hybrid vehicles and the use of innovative fossil energy.
